    Let x = distance of Salma from dock
    x + 7 = distance of Terner from dock
    x² + (x + 7)² = 17²
    x² + x² + 14x + 49 = 289
    2x² + 14x – 240 = 0
    x² + 7x – 120 = 0
    (x + 15)(x – 8) = 0
    (x + 15) = 0
    x = -15 discard, negative
    (x – 8) = 0
    x = 8 km, distance of Salma from dock
    8 + 7 = 15 km, distance of Terner from dock
    Answer b. 15 km
